What I have read in 2020
I have read the following books in 2020:
William Shakespeare, Hamlet, CliffsComplete Shakespeare's Hamlet 1st edition, May 15, 2000
- The most frequently read and performed tragedy written by William Shakespeare. It talks about the story of the Prince of Denmark take revenge against his uncle, who killed Hamlet's father. "to be or not to be", the play have dramatic storyline and also make audience to think a lot of philosophical questions. Hamlet includes total of 5 Acts.
Niccolo Machiavelli, The Prince, W. W. Norton & Company, Inc, 3rd edition
- a phenomenal political theory wrote by Italian diplomat Niccolo Machiavelli. Machiavelli stated a good ruler should use fear to gain political power. He state: "it is much safer to be feared than loved because... fear preserves you by a dread of punishment which never fails" (Machiavelli 166) However, he also listed some good ruler use love to gain citizen's trust and obedience. Machiavelli was aware of the advantages and disadvantages of using love or fear for a ruler. Thus, this book is very objective.
- A great business book that teach me how to close the sales. This book is based on Harvard Negotiation Project, it illustrated multiple ways of negotiation, and the negotiation skills. It is very useful in everyday life. Getting to Yes, write by Roger Fisher, William L. Ury, Bruce Patton
Here is a TED talk from the author of Getting to Yes. He included the brief ideas of Negotiating.
Elizabeth Gilbert, Eat Pray Love: One Woman's Search for Everything Across Italy, India, and Indonesia. Riverhead Books, 2007.
- My all time favorite book. I re-read it again during covid. Gilbert divorced her husband because she was unhappy about her life. She said: “The only thing more unthinkable than leaving was staying; the only thing more impossible than staying was leaving.” ( Gilbert 22). She is brave enough to start her soul searching journey by living in Italy, India, and Indonesia. I can easily relate to the author's thoughts. Traveling around the world and meeting different people, it is a great way for self-exploration.
